So Why is Christian Service So Important?

Every month, our Youth Ministry offers to our parish’s teens many Christian Service opportunities. We are called to help make a difference in our parish, community and world.   Jesus Himself was our model of how we should serve!

Well, okay, but WHY serve?

1)  You are never more like Christ than when you are serving others!
In Philippians 2:5-8, it says, “Have among yourselves the same attitude that is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was the in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found to be human in appearance; He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross!”

2) Serving others allows us to understand the joy that follows sacrifice!
In Hebrews 12:2, it says, “For the sake of the joy that lay before Him, He endured the Cross and despised its shame.” Jesus endured the pain and shame of the cross because He knew what would come out of it. Sometimes service is not pretty, but the joys and satisfaction that will result is worth every effort.

3) Serving others points people to Christ!
Matthew 5:16 says, “Just so, your light must shine before others so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” When we serve others, it brings glory to God and makes people think, “I wonder why he did that for me?” or “What makes her different?” Service is proof that we love God and it helps draw others to Him and His Church. “Actions speak louder than words” is an old saying and it sure is true!

4) Serving others is the way we love God!
In Hebrews 6:10, it says, “For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for His Name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones.” God is so proud and so happy when we serve others. And here is the good news - He will never forget our efforts. We might do great things in this life that are never acknowledged or no one will even say “thank you” to us, but in Heaven our name is being praised by God, His Angels and Saints! Cool huh?

Our service projects range from preparing and serving a meal at the Catholic Worker, raising money to fight breast cancer through a walk-a-thon, visiting folks in a rest home, to even picking up trash on the beach on Earth Day. Every month, our Youth Ministry’s Newsletter is full of opportunities for you to serve!

Some youth feel called to deepen and further their commitment to God and His Church by becoming a “Peer Minister” or a teen leader in our Youth Ministry. All fully initiated Catholic teens (having received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion) are eligible to enter the Peer Ministry Training Program. If you want more information about our Peer Ministry Training Program, the best person to talk to is one of our Peer Ministers! They would love to share with you what they do!

Just remember, no service is beneath us because no service was beneath Jesus. If Jesus can get on His hands and knees to wash His apostles’ stinky feet, who are we to refuse to help one another? If you see a Christian Service project listed in the Youth Ministry’s Newsletter or here on the website that you would like to do, just call us in the Youth Ministry Office at (949) 234-1372 or email Jaymes Curran to sign up!

Please note:  If the service project is off parish grounds, we will require your parents to fill out a permission slip - and we will need parents to help drive to and from the event. (I don’t think Jesus thought about permission slips, but we do - sorry!)  You can drop by our Youth Center to pick up a permission slip or you can even download one from this website.  (If the event is away from the parish, there will be a downloadable permission slip at the bottom of the "Christian Service Opportunities" page.  Click here for this month's Christian Service Opportunities!
